Desmond Lee is Senior Marketing Manager at BurdaLuxury Singapore. In this Q&A, he shares some advice to people who want to explore a career in marketing.
How’s your career journey like at BurdaLuxury?
I joined the company in May 2020 and during that period, the Singapore Government introduced a “Circuit Breaker” due to the Covid-19 situation. It was challenging to get work done with restrictions imposed on our movement, our face-to-face interaction with business associates as well as to get to know my colleagues. I also had the privilege to be part of the committee that planned and executed the moving of Burda Singapore office to its new premises in September 2021.
What sort of duties do you have at work?
My primary role is in circulation & distribution of our magazines; Prestige, Pin, AUGUSTMAN. Apart from the logistics and operations, these include growing and maintaining the database, understanding our VIPs/readers and activating them to our events. I am the Data Protection Officer too.
What’s the most exciting part of your job?
Contributing to and working on projects with my wonderful colleagues! Over the past 18 months, amidst the changing circumstances, we have done 7 gift bag campaigns to our VIPs/readers, 2 fund-raising for charity, 18 retail events and recently, an inaugural watch webinar and a fashion runway show.
What advice would you give to someone looking to explore a career in marketing?
Passion is an important part of a career and keeps the person going. I would advice her/him to be familiar with online tools and platforms to aid their work as well. Also, always have a gown or suit ready.
What animal would you consider your spirit animal?
An elephant because I lift a lot of magazines.
What are the values that drive you?
Commitment and responsibility to the company, to colleagues and business associates. Act with professionalism and respect. Constantly learning and improving my work and self. Make things happen.
